Discovering Al-Balad, Jeddah's Historic Heart

created at 22.8.2026

Al-Balad, the historic centre of Jeddah, has welcomed traders and pilgrims arriving by sea for centuries. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most atmospheric places to explore in Saudi Arabia.
The architecture
The traditional houses of Al-Balad are built from coral stone and decorated with large wooden rawashin — carved latticed balconies that let the sea breeze in while keeping the rooms shaded and private.
Souqs and street food
The markets are full of spices, perfumes, fabrics and sweets. Evenings are the liveliest time to visit, when the lanes fill with people and the smell of freshly cooked local dishes.
Tips for visiting
Wear comfortable shoes for the uneven lanes, dress modestly, and visit in the late afternoon to avoid the midday heat. A guided walk is a great way to hear the stories behind the historic houses.
