A First-Timer's Guide to Dubai

created at 26.8.2026

Dubai mixes record-breaking architecture with traditional markets, desert landscapes and long sandy beaches. For a first visit, a little planning helps you enjoy both sides of the city.
Modern Dubai
Start with the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, and the Dubai Fountain beside it. Downtown Dubai and Dubai Marina are great for evening walks, with plenty of places to eat.
Old Dubai
Cross Dubai Creek on a traditional abra boat and explore the gold and spice souqs. The Al Fahidi historical district, with its wind towers and narrow lanes, shows how the city looked before its rapid growth.
Desert and beaches
A desert safari is a highlight for many visitors, especially at sunset. On the coast, public beaches such as Jumeirah Beach are ideal for a relaxed afternoon.
Getting around
The Dubai Metro connects many of the main sights and is easy to use. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are convenient for everything else.
