Weekend Escapes from Riyadh

created at 14.8.2026

You don't need to travel far from Riyadh for a change of scene. Within a short drive, you'll find dramatic desert cliffs, historic mud-brick towns and quiet villages full of character.
Diriyah
On the edge of the city, Diriyah was the first capital of the Saudi state. Its At-Turaif district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the area has become a favourite for evening walks, museums and restaurants.
The Edge of the World
North-west of Riyadh, the Tuwaiq escarpment drops sharply to a vast plain, giving one of the most spectacular views in the country. The final stretch is off-road, so go with an experienced driver or a tour, and start early.
Ushaiqer heritage village
A couple of hours from Riyadh, Ushaiqer is a beautifully preserved mud-brick village with palm groves and a small museum — a peaceful place to see traditional Najdi architecture.
Before you go
Check the weather, carry plenty of water, and let someone know your plans if you're heading into the desert. Cooler months are the most comfortable time for day trips.
